SPOKANE, Wash- Gonzaga Baseball (14-14, 5-3 WCC) got the offense going with 18 hits in a home win over Pepperdine (10-20, 5-3 WCC) to even the series with a 9-2 victory.
The win tied head coach Mark Machtolf for the Gonzaga Baseball career wins record, tying his predecessor Steve Hertz with 637 career wins. Machtolf has now won 325 WCC games.
Nine different Zag batters got a hit, with three different Bulldogs collecting three or more hits. Ryder Young went a perfect 5 for 5 in the batter's box, tying a program record for hits in a single game. Ricky Sanchez and Hudson Shupe each picked up three hits.
The Zags got a great start from Justin Feld, who picked up the win with seven great innings, tying a career best for innings pitched. Feld allowed only four hits while striking out a season high eight batters. Five of those batters struck out looking.
GU opened the scoring in the second, with Maddox Haley getting a leadoff double and getting scored by Peyton Miller on a single. Haley had two doubles tonight. A double by Rece Schuerman and a single by Sanchez scored another three runs to give GU a lead that they never surrendered. Shupe, Young and Haley all added an RBI in the following two frames, as the Zags extended their lead with runs in three straight innings. Seven Bulldogs had an RBI in the today's game.
The lone blemish on Feld's night came in the fifth inning when the Waves cashed in two runs on three straight hits. Gonzaga responded by scoring another run in the following inning, with Mikey Bell finding home on a wild pitch. Garrett Gores closed out the win with two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit while tying a career high for strikeouts with five punchouts.
The Zags will look to get Machtolf the career wins record at home when they return to play against Pepperdine at 1pm on Saturday.
