SEATTLE- Gonzaga Baseball (17-14) rallied late to beat Washington (15-18) again, using a four run rally in the eighth inning to power to an 8-5 win and a sweep of the two game series.
Four straight hits allowed the Zags to mount the rally in the eighth, with back to back doubles from Ryder Young and Maddox Haley giving GU the lead and the eventual win. Gonzaga had 16Â hits tonight, with four Bulldogs putting up a multi-hit game.
Mickey McClaskey and Garret Gores combined to keep the Huskies to just one run in the final seven innings. McClaskey allowed only two hits while throwing for a career high 4.1 innings of work. After allowing a hit to the first batter he faced, McClaskey responded by retiring eight straight batters. Gores threw for three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.
Washington originally got out to a lead in the first inning after scoring two runs on an RBI double. They added another two runs in the following inning on a Colton Bower home run.
The Zags added a run in the second before scoring runs in back to back innings in the fifth and six innings to draw the score level at four apiece. Mikey Bell singled to drive in Bo Shinkle in the fifth inning. The Zags loaded the bases in the sixth inning, using four straight singles to add two runs from the situation.
Gores worked out of a similar bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh, having walked the bases loaded before inducing a fly ball to get out of the situation with just one run allowed. The Zags then took the lead in the top of the eighth, with Ricky Sanchez scoring Jacob Wrubleski on a single before the two big doubles gave GU the lead. Sanchez had four hits in four at bats today. Gores then closed out the final two innings without issue to secure the fifth straight Gonzaga victory over Washington.
