Gonzaga Baseball uses 18 hits to defeat WSU again in 10-5 win

SPOKANE, Wash.- Gonzaga Baseball (29-17) defeated Washington State (25-23) by a 10-5 score on Monday afternoon to secure a season sweep of the Cougars.

The Zags had 18 hits, their second straight game against Washington State in which they had over fifteen hits. Gonzaga put up a combined 52 hits across all three games against the Cougs. Gonzaga had a hit in each of the first seven innings of the game.

GU's defense also came up big, with the Zags converting four double plays, tying for the third most double plays converted by Gonzaga in a game in the past two decades. Seven different Bulldogs had a multi-hit game today, with Noah Meffert leading the way with a four hit game.

Gonzaga rallied from the wrong side of a score of 5-2 in today's win, with Washington State scoring three runs in the first two innings on a combined seven base runners. Gonzaga loaded the bases in the third inning while scoring two runs to cut into the lead, but WSU responded with solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

The rally that eventually led to the Gonzaga win took place in the bottom of the sixth, when Gonzaga batted around and exploded at the plate. The Zags had a total of nine hits in the inning, scoring seven runs to take the lead. GU had three doubles in the inning and had five straight batters in a row get a hit at one point, leading the Bulldogs score runs on three different pitchers.  Jared Glenn and Zach Bowman held the Cougs to just two runs across a combined eight innings of work to lead the defense to secure the third straight win over Washington State.

Gonzaga will travel to San Francisco for a weekend series that has major implications for the WCC title race. The Dons currently sit in second place in the conference, three games behind the WCC-best Zags with just two weeks left in the regular season. First pitch for Friday's game is set for 2pm.
