The Dad Vail Regatta opened Friday for the Gonzaga men's rowing team with strong afternoon performances that sent both the Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+ into Saturday's grand finals.
The 2V8+ began the day with a fifth-place finish in the time trial, crossing in 5:44.307 to advance into the semifinal round. Gonzaga responded with an improved effort in the afternoon, placing third in its semifinal in 6:02.760 to secure a spot in the grand final.
The Varsity 8+ also rebounded after the morning session. Gonzaga finished 10th overall in the time trial with a mark of 5:38.399 before turning in a strong semifinal performance later in the day. The Bulldogs placed third in their semifinal in 5:45.990, qualifying for Saturday's grand final.
"In the varsity we didn't finish the time trials where we wanted but both crews came out strong this afternoon," assistant coach Kayla Cartelli said. "The races were gutsy! The JV and Varsity both qualified for the grand final, it's bound to be good racing!"
The Zags return to the water Saturday for the second day of the regatta, with both the Varsity 8+ and 2V8+ set to compete in the grand finals.
