After Rain Delay, Bulldogs Advance In Moraga

MORAGA, Calif. - After matches were delayed for four-hours, the Gonzaga University women's tennis team had four players advance to the second round in singles play at the Saint Mary's Invitational.

"I was extremely pleased with our play Friday," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "I thought we showed a lot of patience and perseverance. It is always tough to be delayed for so long, but the team did a great job of staying focused."

The invitation is broken into three draws for singles and doubles play.

In the red singles draw senior Prue Teitzel cruised to the second round after defeating Cal Poly's Jennifer Cornea 7-5, 6-1. She will face the University of California's Klara Fabikova in the round of 16.

Katie Edwards won her red singles match as well. Edwards will face California's Lynn Chai in the round of 16 after defeating Alex Zaniewski from Santa Clara University 6-4, 6-0.

The lone Bulldog to win in the blue singles was Samantha Polayes who cruised to the round of 16 by beating Erica Medlin from San Jose State University 6-0, 6-2. Fellow Zags Sissi Koehler and Isabell Klingert dropped their opening match but will battle in the white singles consolation bracket Saturday.

Alexandra Tallas won her match in the round of 16 of the blue singles draw over UC Davis's Zoe Davidson 7-2, 6-2. Tallas will face Cal Poly's Haley Kepler in the quarterfinals.

"In singles we showed some poise," Gurule said. "This is a very competitive tournament and we are gaining some valuable experience this weekend."

The Bulldogs doubles did not have quite the success singles play had. The duo of Teitzel and Koehler fell in the red doubles draw to the University of Washington's Elian Douglas and Grace Ysidora 8-1.

The pairing of Tallas and Edwards won their opening match in the white doubles draw over UC Davis's Lauren Curry and Melsa Kobayakawa 8-5. However, the duo would fall in the quarterfinals to Washington's Julija Lukac and Natali Coronel 8-2.

Rather than an actual draw, the blue doubles are a round robin format. Klingert and Polayes won their match over UC Davis's Claire Jaramishian and Davidson 8-4.

"Although our results in doubles were mixed, I am proud that after each tournament we are getting better," Gurule said.

Gonzaga returns to the courts Saturday for the second day of play.

"Saturday will be another very long day," Gurule said. "I know the team excited to build on what we did Friday."
