CHENEY, Wash. - Gonzaga University scored three first-half goals - two by Katie
Carpenter - and held on to defeat Eastern Washington University 3-2 Monday
in a non-conference women's soccer match, avenging an earlier 2-0 setback to
the Eagles.
Carpenter, who had a goal and an assist in last Friday's win over Carroll
College, scored the first goal for the Bulldogs (6-9-0) at 8:27 when she
converted her own miss into a rebound goal for her fourth of the season. The
Eagles (1-13-0) tied the match 10 minutes later when Tracy Wilcoxen's direct
kick went over the head of Gonzaga keeper Gina Legaz at 18:30.
Freshman claire Whitfield broke the tie with her fourth goal of the season
at 24:34, Sara Streufert collecting the assist. Carpentar scored what proved
to be the winning goal just five minutes before intermission when she
connected on Whitfield's cross to center from the right side for the 3-1
halftime advantage.
The Bulldogs, who outshot EWU 12-5 in the first half, saw the Eagles force
the action more in the second half. EWU held an 8-4 edge in second-half
shots, and pulled to within one goal at 72:29 when Caryn Noel scored on an
assist from Wilcoxen.
EWU fired four more shots in the final 18:00, Legaz called on for a pair of
saves, while GU managed just one shot down the stretch. Legaz had 6 saves,
while EWU keeper Bree Holsing had 4 saves.
EWU had won this year's first meeting at Gonzaga 2-0 after Gonzaga had taken
the first two meetings in the series last season 10-1 and 5-1.
Gonzaga returns to West Coast Conference action with a pair of matches this
weekend, beginning with a noon match Friday against the University of San
Diego in the first half of a double-header. The Bulldog men meet the Toreros
in the 2 p.m. nightcap. USD's men's and women's soccer programs both beat
Santa Clara University's top-ranked men's and women's teams last weekend in
WCC matches.
