Women's Basketball Downs Manukau 66-33

SPOKANE, Wash. - Three Gonzaga players scored in double-figures Wednesday night as the Bulldogs defeated the Manakau New Zealand Basketball Travelers in a women's basketball exhibition game at Martin Centre.

Gonzaga jumped out to a quick first-half lead in the contest as Nathalie Chevallay scored seven points and Chelsea Clark came off the bench to contribute seven. The Zags opened up a 29-13 halftime lead as they limited Manakau to just 19 percent shooting from the floor and out-rebounded the New Zealand squad by a 30-17 margin.

Gonzaga continued to dominate the contest in the second half as junior Jessica Malone warmed up from the outside. Malone connected on 3-of-4 shots from three point range for 13 second-half points and a game-high 18 points. Manukau closed the gap in the rebounding department but was still out-boarded by a 32-22 margin. Gonzaga did shoot better in the second twenty minutes hitting just under 40 percent from the floor.

Jessica Malone led all scorers with 18 points while Nathalie Chevallay finished with a double-double at 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Chelsea Clark was a strong contributor off the bench for the Zags dumping in 12 points and 10 rebounds. Manukau was led on the evening by Antonia Solmon with 7 points and Charmain Smith pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

Gonzaga will open its 2000-01 regular season on Saturday, November 18th when the Zags host Boise State University at 7 p.m. in the Martin Centre. Manukau will take off Thursday before travelling south in the Palouse to meet up with Washington State on Friday evening.
