MORAGA, Calif. - Gonzaga University's men's soccer team took care of business Sunday in the regular-season finale, and now awaits word on its NCAA Tournament fate when the 48-team bracket is announced at noon Monday PST on FOX Sports.
The Bulldogs downed Saint Mary's College 1-0 ro run their overall record to 9-4-2 and their West Coast Conference slate to 4-1-1 for 13 points and a tie for second with the University of Portland. Santa Clara University had claimed the WCC crown and with it the automatic berth into the NCAA field with a 1-0 win at Loyola Marymount University on Saturday.
Arni Pjetursson scored at 68:11 Sunday to give Gonzaga its fifth win in the last six meetings against the Gaels (6-11-1, 1-5-0).
After a scoreless first half, Pjetursson fired a shot past goalkeeper Dan McEhinney from more than 20 yards out. The two teams matched each other with nine shots each. McElhinney had three saves, while Gonzaga goalkeeper Mike McCarthy wasn't called on for a save.
The Bulldogs, whose lone WCC setback came at Santa Clara, will be seeking their inaugural NCAA berth when the pairings are announced Monday. The field expanded from 32 to 48 teams this season, enhancing Gonzaga's chances for one of 28 at-large bids.
