The Gonzaga Bulldogs women's basketball team mounted a 27-point comeback in the second half but fell short to the University of San Diego, 84-80, in West Coast Conference women's action on Saturday at The Kennel.
USD took control from the get-go as the Toreros built a 30-15 lead as Amber Jansen hit a jumper at the 7:13 mark. The Toreros established a 20-point lead (51-31) at halftime when Melissa Glazebrook made good on a 15-footer at the top of the key as the half ended. The 51 first-half point total was the largest amount surrendered by GU this season. Jansen led USD in the first half with 12 points. The Zags were led by Jessica Malone's 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting.
San Diego opened up a 27-point lead (64-37) as USD's Robyn Fortney connected on a baseline jumper at the 13:46 mark. The Zags would slowly chip away the Toreros lead the rest of the way. GU cut the lead to eight (66-58) as Nathalie Chavallay scored two of her 17 second-half points on a jumper from the top of the key. The Bulldogs chiseled the USD margin to three points when Chevallay's layin fell through with 57 seconds remaining. The Toreros turned the ball over and Gonzaga made the most of the opportunity when Carmel Lampson hit a 3-pointer that tied the game 80-80 with 0:38 left.
Erin Malich's uncontested layin with 18 seconds left gave USD a two-point cushion (82-80). The Bulldogs looked to the WCC's leading scorer, Jessica Malone, for a 3-point shot. Her attempt was contested by several USD players and fell short with 0:03 remaining. The Zags were forced to foul and Keri Nakamoto sealed GU's fate as she sank both free throw attempts.
USD finished with four players scoring in double-digits as Amber Jensen recorded the team's high with 22 points. Nakamoto contributed 13 points as Robyn Fortney and Marta Menuez each chipped in 11. The Bulldogs were led by Jessica Malone's game-high 24 points on 8-of-26 shooting. Nathalie Chevallay and Anne Bickelhaupt set career-high point totals with 17 and 12, respectively. Carmel Lampson finished with 12 points as her four 3's were a major part of the Zags comeback efforts.
Lampson and Chelsea Clark, the team's only seniors, playing in their final game of their careers at The Kennel. Clark would finish with two rebounds, two assists, and one point.
Gonzaga (5-22, 0-14) was denied of their first win in conference play this year as this marks their first winless WCC season in GU history. The Toreros improved to 9-16 overall and 5-9 in the WCC. The Bulldogs will wait to hear who they will play in the first round of the WCC Tournament as the parings will be announced later tonight.
