SPOKANE, Wash. - Christina Davis hammered home 16 kills Friday night but it was not enough as Idaho (2-5) used a balanced attack to sweep Gonzaga (1-7) in volleyball action at Martin Centre. Idaho won the contest 30-28, 30-25 and 30-20.
The Zags raced out to an early lead in game one leading 9-5 behind early kills by Davis. The Vandals then rallied for an 18-14 lead as Brooke Haeberle served five straight Idaho points. GU was able to tie the game at 20-20 as Idaho had three straight attack errors, but the Vandals put the contest away with two Gonzaga attack errors.
Idaho raced out to a 13-9 lead in the second game as Haeberle again served four straight points and Gonzaga had three attack errors. Idaho kept the Zags at a distance as Sarah Meek had four kills down the stretch.
It was all Idaho in the final game as Haeberle had four kills in an early 16-11 lead. Abby Cullen connected for back-to-back blocks for Gonzgaa to close the lead to 16-14. Haeberle and Meek then combined for four more kills with Laura McCaffrey hammering down the game winner.
Idaho has now won seven straight over Gonzaga as Haeberle finished with 14 kills and Meek had 11. Davis led all players with 16 kills and 13 digs. Heather Signor also had 13 digs. Gonzaga returns to action on Wednesday night as they host Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. in the Martin Centre.
