RENO, Nev. - The Arizona State Sun Devils combined for a .316 attack percentage on Friday night to collect a 3-0 volleyball win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the opening round of the SBC/Sands Regency Invitational. Arizona State won by scores of 30-23, 30-22, 30-20.
Juliana Escobar and Natalie Harris each had 14 kills for the Sun Devils as they improved to 2-2 on the season. ASU opened the first game hitting .406 while Gonzaga hung tough with a .258 attack percentage, their highest of the match. The game had six lead changes and 15 times when the game was tied before Arizona State could pull away late.
Senior middle blocker Abby Cullen was the Bulldogs top offensive weapon with 12 kills as Gonzaga finished with 31 total and a .129 attack percentage. Cullen also accounted for six of the 17 Gonzaga blocks. Gonzaga won the battle at the nets with a 17-10 block advantage including solo blocks by Cullen and Megan Thompson.
Gonzaga was hampered on the attack in the final two games as they hit .024 in the second game and .143 in the final stanza. Melissa Schickler had 21 assists for Gonzaga and Heather Signor added 11 digs.
The Bulldogs (1-3) will face host Nevada on Saturday morning before ending the tournament against Tennessee in the afternoon session.
