Zags Drop One To No. 10 Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team started the day with upset on their minds but suffered a heartbreaking West Coast Conference loss to the 10th ranked Santa Clara University Broncos 1-0 Friday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

With the win the Broncos move to 10-4-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the WCC. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 10-7-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the WCC.

After the two teams battled to a scoreless first half it was the Broncos who tallied the lone goal of the match at the 63:49 mark. Freshman midfielder Brittany Klien recorded her first goal of the season when she controlled a cross from junior defender Micaela Esquivel and slipped the ball out of the reach of Gonzaga's junior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen.

Santa Clara's sophomore goalkeeper Julie Ryder recorded two saves in picking up the win for the Broncos. Haugen recorded six saves in the loss for the Bulldogs.

GU was outshot by the Broncos 15-2 and SCU also held a decisive 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Bulldogs will continue their California road trip as they travel to Southern California for a 1 p.m. WCC match against No. 25 San Diego on Sunday at Torero Stadium.
