EUGENE, Ore. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team (2-0-1) remains unbeaten and is off to its best start in program history after battling to a 1-1 tie with the University of Oregon (2-1-1) Friday evening at Pape Field.
After the two teams battled through a scoreless first period in which the Bulldogs out shot Oregon 4-3, GU continued its offensive attack at the start of the second period. Just 27 seconds into the period, sophomore Jamie Blanche had a good look at the net and launched a laser shot which was saved by Oregon's freshman goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield.
The Zags didn't back down, they kept the offensive pressure on Oregon's defense and at the 57:08 mark GU broke the scoreless tie. Sophomore Christine Soma found herself with a good look at the goal and was able to slip the ball past Chatfield to tally her second goal of the season and give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage.
That lead would stand for the next 18 minutes until Oregon's senior midfielder Cristan Higa evened the score as she was able to get the ball past Gonzaga's senior goalkeeper Ashley Haugen at the 75:45 mark.
The two teams then battled through two scoreless overtime periods to leave the game at its final of 1-1.
Haugen allowed one goal and recorded four saves in picking up the tie for the Bulldogs. Her counterpart, Chatfield, allowed one goal and recorded six saves in recording the tie for the Ducks.
The Bulldogs will return to the pitch on Friday as they head to Santa Clara, Calif. for a 7 p.m. match against Cal State Fullerton in the opening game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic.
