SPOKANE, Wash. - Emily Anderson and Kendall Bates each posted singles victories Friday but it wasn't enough as the Gonzaga University women's tennis team fell to the University of Idaho 6-2 at the Spokane Racquet Club.
With the loss, Gonzaga falls to 2-6 overall. Idaho improves to 3-3 overall.
Both Anderson and Bates dropped their opponents in straight sets. Anderson, playing at the No. 1 position, defeated Idaho's Patricia Ruman (6-2, 6-1), while Bates dropped Lauren Drew at the No. 4 spot (6-3, 6-3). In other singles play Sydney Lederhouse fell at the No. 2 position to Mariel Tinirello, while Carrie Schofield fell to Laruen Shrubb at No. 5 (7-5, 6-3) and Kimberly Aigner fell in No. 6 to Kasie King (6-1, 6-2). Aglaya Kokurina, who had a two-match win streak heading into the evening, fell at the No. 3 position to Efrat Leopold (6-4, 6-4).
In doubles play, the Bulldogs earned a victory at the No. 3 position, when the GU duo of Schofield and Kokurina combined to defeat Idaho's Shurbb and King 9-7. At the No. 1 position, Bates and Anderson fell to Ruman and Tinirello (8-6), while Lederhouse and Erin Humphrey fell at the No. 2 spot to Leopold and Lauren Drew (8-6).
Gonzaga will return to action on March 9 when they host Montana State University at 4 p.m.
