Zags Claim Two Doubles Titles At EWU/GU Classic

Sept. 26, 2010

CHENEY, Wash. - Gonzaga University saw two of its doubles teams claim bracket titles Sunday in the final day of the EWU/GU Classic.

Juniors Zhia Hwa Chong and Scott Sullivan started the day in the main draw semifinals, defeating the University of Portland's Michel Hukwo and Justin Guay 8-6 to advance to the championship match. Against the tournament's top seed University of Montana's Carl Kuschke and David Cysneiros, Chong and Sullivan upset Portland's duo 8-2 to claim the doubles main draw title.

In the doubles back draw semifinals, freshmen Muzeen Ismath and Jack Schoebel eliminated Seattle University's Patrick Boorkman and Simon Meske 8-5 while on the other side of the bracket senior Kevin Eischen and freshman Pablo Mosquera Pérez won an intense 9-8 (5) match with the Pilots' Nick Wales and Aaron Horwath to set up an all-Bulldog championship match. Perez and Eischen defeated their teammates 8-5 to officially claim the title.

Although Ismath and junior Tyler Campbell reached the singles back draw finals, the two did not compete for the championship.

"I'm really proud of the guys with their performance this weekend," Bulldogs head coach Peter MacDonald said. "It was a great way to start the season and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do in the next three tournaments."

The Zags return to action Oct. 8-10 at the Boise State University Fall Classic.
