SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team opened the West Coast Conference portion of its schedule with a 3-0 setback to the University of San Diego, who is currently ranked 24th in the latest AVCA Top 25 poll, on Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego. The Bulldogs (2-15, 0-1 WCC) fell to the Toreros (10-4, 1-0 WCC) 17-25, 11-25, 15-25.
The Bulldogs were dealt a big blow in the first set. With San Diego leading by seven early, junior Kaprina Goodwin went down with an injury and did not re-enter the contest.
"Kaprina dislocated her right elbow in the first set at 9-2," head coach Dave Gantt said after the match. "That unsettled our team and the match went downhill from there."
No Zag player finished with more than five kills in the loss. Senior Kelsey Bashaw, junior Laura Day and sophomores Terran Poindexter and Jessie Genger each led the team with five kills apiece. Sophomore Kylie Edinger added four kills and had a team-best .500 hitting percentage.
Junior setter Denise Van de Mortel dished out 24 assists as GU finished the match with a mere 28 total team kills and a .071 attacking percentage. Van de Mortel also added eight digs and one kill.
The nationally ranked Toreros, who were picked to finish first in the WCC after placing second a season ago, had two players close out the match in double-figure kills and had seven players total tally at least one kill. Ali Troost led San Diego with a double-double of 15 kills, a match-high, and 12 digs, along with a .414 hitting clip. Chloe Ferrari added 10 kills on 17 attack attempts for a team-best .588 attacking percentage. Ferrari also had three blocks and one dig in the three-set victory.
Torero Kelsi Myers passed out 40 assists as USD closed out the match with 21 more kills than Gonzaga with 49 and had a .363 hitting percentage. Myers was one dig away from being the second San Diego player collect a double-double as she ended with nine.
San Diego had the 61-49 advantage in digs and held the 7-4 edge in blocks. Torero Amy DeGroot had a match-high 15 digs, while Bulldog liber Allyson Powell finished with 14.
Gonzaga looks to rebound from its first match WCC loss when it plays at Saint Mary's College Saturday. The Bulldogs and Gaels, who won the WCC a year ago and were picked to finish second in 2010, are set to face off at 1 p.m.
