Volleyball Suffers Defeat To No. 24 Pepperdine

SPOKANE, Wash. - Despite freshman Jordan Gasser's 12 kills, the Gonzaga University women's volleyball team suffered its sixth consecutive loss to No. 24 Pepperdine 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-17) Saturday at the Martin Centre.

Gonzaga falls to 9-13 overall and 1-7 in West Coast Conference play. Pepperdine improves to 16-7 and 5-4 in the WCC.

"If you look at this match you will notice at 9-9 in the first set we were playing well," fourth-year head coach Dave Gantt said. "Then we do a few unintelligent volleyball things and give up a run that we never recovered from. As a young team we are fragile and it is a challenge for us."

The Bulldogs were competitive for the first half of the first set until four attack errors put the Zags down 13-9. The Waves would maintain the four point lead and add an 8-0 run to put the score at 22-12. Gasser totaled six of her kills in the set but Pepperdine hitting at .520 line was too much for Gonzaga.

"Our communication on the court has become a leadership of self kind of thing," Gantt said. "With our youth movement we have on the job training that we were hoping to avoid. Due to injuries and inconsistency, we are on the court with kids, ready or not, are forced into it. We have to keep working at what we need even though we are young."

Pepperdine quickly jumped on Gonzaga in the second set. The Bulldogs were down 9-1 and struggled to attack with any efficiency. Senior Terran Poindexter got involved in the set with two of the Zags eight kills but the team hit negative .088 for the set and went down 2-0.

Junior Meredith Crenshaw also suffered a leg injury in the set adding to the Zags woes.

"With Meredith going down and being without Kylie we are not sure what system will be running next week," Gantt said. "Monday we get back to work on this because we have another ranked opponent right around the corner."

The Bulldogs and the Waves split the first 14 points in the second set before Pepperdine pulled away for the win. Redshirt freshman Kalistina Takau had three kills but Pepperdine out killed GU 20-7.

"We will keep working on serve receive so we can control the ball on our side of the net," Gantt said. "When things go wrong for us it's because we cannot side out and defensively were not physical enough. It is a problem with us but it is the situation we are in and we will continue to battle."

Gonzaga's next match is Thursday Oct. 25 when they face No. 16 BYU in the Martin Centre.
