RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Kylie Peek extended her singles winning streak to four straight as the Gonzaga University women's tennis team defeated UC Riverside 6-1 Friday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (3-1) jumped into an early lead by taking two of the three doubles matches. Sophie Lantta and Katie Edwards got the Bulldogs started the day with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles. Although the Highlanders (1-2) picked up at No. 2 doubles, the tandem of Kristina Zauere and Prue Teitzel clinched an 8-4 win at the No. 1 spot to secure the doubles point.
Although the Highlanders tied the match 1-1 with a win at No. 1 singles, the Bulldogs were able to regain the lead and never look back. Zauere rallied back from losing the first set 6-4 by winning the next two 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to help the Bulldogs earn their second point. Kylie Peek also lost the first set of her No. 3 singles match but the freshman bounced back to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 and extend her singles win streak to four.
Lantta clinched the Bulldogs fourth point with a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles. Teitzel won her No. 2 singles match in three sets 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 and Britta Stime closed out the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6.
"It was a great win for us today. The final score, 6-1, was not indicative of how close the match was, UCR, is a very talented team," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "We did a great job of playing with intensity and poise today. This was a complete team win."
The Bulldogs will now head down the road to the campus of Cal State Northridge to play the Matadors Saturday at 1 p.m.
