Quintana, Smith To Join Bulldog Cross Country/Track Program

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University cross country and track head coach Pat Tyson has announced the addition of freshmen Dillon Quintana from Mt. Baker High in Deming, Wash., and Kinsly Smith out of Jackson Hole, Wyo., High to join the Bulldogs this fall.

"Both of these young men have a very positive upside," Tyson said. "Dillon was hampered by injury but seems to have overcome that and posted some solid track times this past spring. Kinsly has turned in some solid performances at altitude. I look for both of them to initially give us great depth as they develop in our program."

Dillon Quintana capped his senior season by winning the Washington State 1A 3200 meters in 9:32.74 for a 9-second victory. All of that followed a senior cross country campaign that saw him break his school record for 5K with a 15:30 and finish the season by winning the Washington State 2A title in 15:50.0 as he nipped Tom Bradley of Blaine High by .8 seconds, Bradley finishing in 15:50.8.

He spent nearly four months in a hip cast and returned for the spring track and field season. Doing pool and elliptical workouts, he ran a then-career best 2:10.50 for 800 meters, a season-best 4:41.17 in the 1600 meters at the Northwest Conference 2A Sub-District meet and a season-best 10:02.95 for 3200 meters at the NWC 2A Sub-District.

His junior track season he ran a then-PR 4:29.03 for 1600 meters at the NWC 2A District Meet and a season-best 10:30.47 for 3200 meters in a dual meet with Anacortes.

It's hard to tell if Tyson has a sprinter or a distance runner on his hands in Kinsly Smith when it comes to track.

The answer might be both.

His high school career saw him run everything from 200 meters to 3200 meters as well as being on some relay teams.

As a senior he placed fifth in the Wyoming State 3A Championship in the 200 in a career-best 23.03, third in the 400 in a career best 50.78 and just .42 seconds out of first and ran the second leg on the State championship 4x800 relay team that won in 8:20.83. Jackson Hole finished second in the State 3A team chase, just four points out of first.

His junior season saw him win the 800 meters in 1:57.84, finish sixth in the 1600 in 4:40.87 and place eighth in the 400 meters in 1:03.44. He anchored the 4x800 relay team that finished second in 8:26.66. Jackson Hole won the team title by 10 points.

His sophomore year he placed 12th in the State 3A 800 meters in 2:12.05, 10th in the 1600 in 5:01.57, 17th in the 3200 in 11:41.20 and ran the lead leg on the State 3A championship 4x800 relay team which finished in 8:35.23. Jackson Hole finished fourth at State.

A four-time State 3A track participant, his freshman season he captured the 3200 meter title in 10:11.08, was second in the 800 meters in 2:02.72, second in the 1600 in 4:45.39 and ran the third leg of the 4x800 relay team which captured the State crown in 8:23.34. Jackson Hole claimed the team title.

He capped his cross country career last fall placing 21st in the Wyoming State 3A championship in 18:35.78 over the 5K layout in helping Jackson Hole finish second. His junior season he place fourth in 17:36.21 as Jackson Hole had four of the top six runners to easily claim the State title.

As a sophomore he finished 14th in the State cross country championship in 18:22.55, Jackson Hole with four of the top nine finishers to out-distance the field for the State crown.

When he's not running, Smith is skiing. As a senior in the Wyoming State Nordic Championship he finished his two Nordic runs in 36th in 31:34.1 in the Freestyle competition and 38th in 34:17.7 in the Classic run to help lead Jackson Hole to the team title.

His junior season he finished 47th in the 5km Men Skate in 20:29.0 as Jackson Hole won the team title and placed 55th in the 10km Men Classic in 48:12.0 as Jackson Hole also captured the team crown in that event to help lead Jackson to the State title.

Smith graduated as a 4-time All-West 3A Conference and All-State 3A selection in track and was two-time All-Conference and All-State in cross country. He was a member of the National Honors Society and was on the Student Council for three years. He plans to major in mechanical engineering at Gonzaga.
