SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga men's rowing crew earned victories over Washington State in both the 8+ and 4+ boats on Saturday on the Spokane River.

"I liked our performance today," head coach Dan Gehn said. "We've only been on the water for two weeks and the varsity did a great job of separating early and holding off a charge in the middle of the course from WSU. All the boats handle themselves well."

In the first race of the day between the Varsity 8+ boats, Gonzaga held off a fast-charging Cougar boat and finished strong in a time of 15:38.34 over 5,000 meters. That was 1.95 seconds faster than WSU.

Gonzaga's Second Varsity 8+ earned a win with a time of 16:13.44, and the First Novice 8+ were victorious as well with a time of 16:46.90 in the opening session of the day.

In the second session, Gonzaga's Varsity 4+ outdueled WSU by nearly a minute with a time of 18:08.16. The Zags also earned victories at Second Novice 8+ (17:50.66) and Third Novice 8+ (19:13.53).

The Zags will back on the water of the Spokane River next weekend with the Head of the Spokane on Saturday at 9 a.m. and Class Day Races on Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
