SPOKANE, Wash.—For the first time in 12 years, the Gonzaga University men's tennis team got to play a tournament on their home courts Friday, and they took advantage of the opportunity as several Zags advanced in the first few rounds of the Gonzaga Fall Tournament held at the Stevens Center in Spokane.
"The tournament went smoothly today," said Gonzaga men's tennis head coach Peter MacDonald. "It was great having all these teams up in support. We're off to a great start."
The tournament started out with two rounds of doubles play Friday morning, establishing the bracket's quarterfinal participants for Saturday. One Zag duo will be in those quarterfinals as Nick Kamisar and Alvaro Nazal picked up two doubles wins, taking down Portland State's Jonathan Pike and Nacor Ibanez 8-2 in the first round and beating WCC foe Portland's Kent Adreasen and Jamie Fisher 8-5. They'll face Montana's Tomasz Soltyka and Peter Mimnagh-Fleming in the quarters.
Also picking up a doubles victory, Connor Arend and Chris Dalton reached the Round of 16 with an 8-3 win over Montana's Alexandr Rudenco and Zach Fisher. The Zag duo, playing their first doubles matches of the season, lost in the second round 8-3 to Portland State's Matt Prontesi and Stuart Tierney.
Also taking part in the doubles draw, Sergio Chip and Vicente Varas played their best doubles match of the season but narrowly fell to Portland's Mathieu and Pierre Garcia 8-7 (6). Rounding out the Zags' doubles lineup, Joey Brandt and Vladimir Mijatovic fell 8-6 to Idaho's Odon Barta and Mark Kovacs.
The Zags also got through one complete round of singles action at the Stevens Center, and four Zags advanced to the second round in their respective brackets. In the Blue Flight, the top singles bracket, Nazal advanced with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Montana's Rudenco while Kamisar got past Lewis-Clark State's Sonam Phuntsok 6-4, 6-2. Nazal and Kamisar are the bracket's top two seeds.
Mijatovic and Varas also played in the top singles flight but lost their opening matches. Mijatovic fell in straight 6-4 sets to Montana's Soltyka while Varas lost to Idaho's Fonseca 6-2, 7-5.
In the Red Flight, third-seeded Chip beat Lewis-Clark State's Zhanbola Zhakupov 6-1, 6-0. Dalton, playing his first singles match of the season, came from behind to beat Montana State's Dylan Harvala 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Also playing in his first singles match of the year, Arend lost 6-3, 6-1 to Seattle U's Connor Leahy. Finally, Brandt tallied a set win in the Red Flight, but it wasn't enough as he fell in three to Portland State's Ian Risenhoover 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The Zags continue play at their own Gonzaga Fall Tournament Saturday, Oct. 25. Play starts at 8:00 a.m. with both quarterfinal and consolation doubles action, again at the Stevens Center.
