MISSOULA, Mont. - The Gonzaga women's and men's cross country teams each took home a third-place finish, including a second-place individual finish by the ladies' Amelia Evans at the Montana Invitational on Saturday in Missoula, Mont.
Competing on the University of Montana Golf Course, Evans turned in a time of 17:33.82 over 5,000 meters to lead the women's side. Behind Evans, the GU women's group fed off each other and finished 15th through 18th to round out the top five. Freshman Jordan Thurston was 15th with a time of 18:10.30, followed by Shelby Mills (18:12.78), Zoe Urcadez (18:20.13) and Lara Tuthill (18:23.39).
"We were really pleased to see the pack mentality and improvement of our next 6-8 runners after Amelia," Gonzaga women's head coach Patty Ley said. "I was impressed by a number of 5k bests from our freshmen athletes led by Jordan Thurston with a 40-second improvement over her high school best. We had other great races from Lara Tuthill and Alison Fraher."
On the men's side, a day after GU's top seven competed at Notre Dame, Max Kaderabek and Dillon Quintana led team to a third-place finish overall, placing 11th and 18th overall, respectively. Kaderabek covered the 8,000 meters in 25:35.07 and Quintana finished in 25:48.73.
"It was a tough 8K course for the men with a tough hill, so it tested them," Ley said. "But I thought they had a really solid race today."
Ben Stout, Dan Amann and Andy Thomas completed the GU men's top five. Stout was 20th at 25:52.64, Amann was 26th at 26:00.67, and Thomas was 28th at 26:10.29.
Gonzaga will be back in action on two weeks at the Inland Empire Classic in Lewiston, Idaho on Oct. 18. The meet is hosted by Lewis-Clark State College.
