Bulldogs Men's Tennis Falls To Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. - Nick Kamisar won at No. 1 singles but the Gonzaga University men's tennis dropped 6-1 to the University of Portland at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center Saturday.

The defeat moves Gonzaga to 8-6 overall and 0-2 in West Coast Conference play.

Kamisar won his team-best ninth match of the spring with an impressive triumph over Pilot Reid DeLaubenfels 6-1, 7-5. The win was the first for Kamisar at the No .1 spot.

The Bulldogs challenged in the remaining singles matches, taking three of them to the third set.

Vladimir Mijatovic, playing at No. 3, came up shy 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to Alex Ferrero; senior No. 4 Jack Schoebel fell 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to Justin Guay; and No. 5 Muzeen Ismath was downed 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) to Alex Wallace.

Hayden Smith returned from injury and played at No. 2. Smith threated to send the match to the third set but went under 6-3, 7-5 to Ratan Gill. The last singles defeat came at No. 6 where Pablo Mosquera Pérez suffered a 6-3, 6-2 setback to Kent Andreasen.

Portland claimed each of the doubles matches as well.

GU was in tight matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. At the top spot, Ismath and Schoebel fell 8-7 (8-6) to Gill and Ferrero. At No. 3, Michel Hu Kwo and Guay prevailed over Kamisar and Mosquera 8-6.

At No. 2, Mijatovic and Joey Brandt went down 8-2 to DeLaubenfels and Andreasen.

The Bulldogs have a short turnaround as they face Portland State University Sunday.
