OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Gonzaga men's golf team is tied for second on the team leaderboard, and Sean Walsh is one stroke off of the individual lead after the first two rounds of the Bill Ross Intercollegiate at the Milburn Golf and Country Club.

Appearing in the tournament for the first time, the Zags got off to a stellar start in the 54-hole event hosted by the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Gonzaga opened with a 291 (+3) team total in the opening round, before wrapping up Day 1 at eight strokes over par (296) in the second round. The Bulldogs are 11-over (587) through two rounds and just two strokes off of the leading team, Wichita State.

Sean Walsh continued the hot start to his senior season. He carded a 69 (-3) and a 70 (-2) in the first two rounds. Walsh's 11 birdies through the first 36 holes are the most in the 69-golfer field. He had five birdies to just two bogeys in Round 1. The Keller, Texas native is in second place and is in a strong position for his third consecutive top-15 finish in the first three events of the season. He was three-under on the course's par-four holes (3.85) and four-under on the par-five holes (4.50).

Walsh was tied for second on the leaderboard after the first round, but his teammate, Ryan Gaske, led the field. Gaske's first round 68 (-4) was the lowest carded round in the tournament on Day 1. He made six birdies in Round 1, with just two bogeys. A double bogey on the front nine and an eight on the par-three 15th hole led to a seven-over par (79) in the second round. The junior is tied for 13th at three-over (147). His eight birdies are the fourth-most in the tournament.

Will Brueckner and Angus Montgomery are tied for 33rd with two round totals of 153 (+8). After starting with an 80 (+8) in the first round, Brueckner climbed 30 spots on the leaderboard with a 72 (E) in Round 2. Montgomery was three-over (75) and five-over (77) in the first two rounds. Brueckner has 22 pars through the first 36 holes.

The lone freshman on the GU roster, Tyler Munetake, is tied for 55th. He is 12-over (156) after rounds of 79 (+7) and 77 (+5) on Monday. The Wailuku, Hawaii native had 19 pars and four birdies on the first day.

"I'm proud of the way the team battled today," Gonzaga Head Coach Robert Gray said. "The wind kicked up in the afternoon, making the fairways and greens hard to hit with the narrow fairways and smaller greens. Each player ran into adversity and bounced back. In addition, we finished much better than we've done in the past and it's allowed us to be in the position were in for tomorrow. If we had finished like we have in the past, we'd be in a drastically different position."

Wichita State tops the team leaderboard at nine-over (585). The Shockers opened the tournament with a first day low of 287 (-1) in Round 1. They were 10-over (298) in the second round. WSU's Grant Bennett tops the individual leaderboard after back-to-back rounds of 69 (-3). Air Force is tied with Gonzaga in second.

"It's really bunched up at the top of the leaderboard," Gray said. "Patience and handling adversity will be a huge component of the round tomorrow. We can't control anyone else, just ourselves. We're looking for five solid scores for tomorrow."

The Zags begin the third and final round at 6:15 a.m. Pacific Time. Munetake will be the first to tee off, while Walsh will be the last at 6:55 a.m. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
