Zags Wrap Up 2015 in WCC Quarterfinals

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—The 2015 dual season came to an end for Gonzaga's women's tennis squad Thursday as they fell to third-seeded and No. 64-ranked San Francisco 4-0 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.

The quarterfinal matchup began with doubles play where the sixth-seeded Zags won 17 total games against USF foes. On court three, the tandem of Kylie Peek and Franziska Koehler won five games in their pro set against Sofia Holmberg and Milica Hadzi-Tanovic but fell 8-5. Up one court, Melanie Yates and Alex Bourguignon took on the Dons' Thyra Taune and Genevieve McCloskey, losing by the same 8-5 score.

Atop the doubles lineup, Katie Edwards and Samantha Polayes took on USF's Andrea Ka and Marina Nikolic, batting to a 7-7 score line when that match was halted. The Bulldog duo was named All-WCC Honorable Mention for doubles play earlier in the week while Ka and Nikolic made the conference's First Team for doubles.

In singles action, the match on court one featured a couple of First Team All-WCC players as Edwards and Ka squared off for the second time today. Edwards won nine games total, pushing Ka into an extra game in the second set before falling 6-4, 7-5. A senior, Edwards ends her GU career with 52 career singles wins and 64 doubles victories.

Yates squared off against Genevieve McCloskey again in singles play as the two competed for the No. 5 singles point. Yates won three games in the first set before falling 6-3, and she lost the second 6-1. She wrapped up the year with 10-10 overall record and also went .500 in dual play.

#64 San Francisco clinched the match at No. 2 singles where Polayes took five games off of Taune before falling 6-2, 6-3. Polayes won 17 singles matches throughout the year and, along with Edwards, earned All-WCC Honorable Mention in doubles play.

Two Zags were up a set when their matches were halted and left unfinished. Peek, a senior, was only one game away from victory on court three after she led her second set against Hadzi-Tanovic 5-4. She took the first set by a 6-2 score. Peek also ends her career with over 50 singles wins, going 53-50 individually. Her 17 singles wins as a senior tie a career high. At No. 6 singles, Koehler posted a set victory as the match was halted. She beat Homberg 7-6 in their only frame, prevailing by six points in the tiebreak. The junior also set a career mark with 18 individual victories. She also claimed 19 doubles wins and, along with Polayes, equaled the program record for doubles wins in a season.

On court three, Bourguignon was a game away from evening up her match at one set apiece. The freshman fell to Nikolic 1-6 in the first frame, but won six games in the second for an incomplete match score of 1-6, 6-5. Bourguignon made an impact on her first year on campus, capturing 24 singles wins and tying the program record for wins in a season.

With the loss, the Zags end the year with a 12-9 dual record. Twelve wins is the second-most in program history, trailing only 14 wins in 2010's dual season. They lose Edwards, Peek, and fellow senior Alexandra Tallas to graduation but add three incoming freshman for 2015-16.
