July 10, 2015 ANDOVER, Kan. -- Gonzaga men's golfer, Sean Walsh, had another top-10 finish this summer at the 112th annual Trans-Mississippi Championship. He tied for 10th in the 72-hole event at the enchanting Flint Hills National Golf Club.
Fresh off his underdog run to the North and South title, Walsh finished three-under-par (277) in the four-round tournament that ran from Tuesday to Thursday. He was seven-under entering the final round in the 56-golfer field.
"Overall it was a good tournament," Walsh said. "Unfortunately, I couldn't quite get the win this week but it was nice to be in contention for a second week in a row. I just couldn't seem to make enough putts this week and really wasn't hitting the driver off the tee particularly well." The winner, Colin (Morikawa) just played a great week of golf, making it hard for anyone to beat him this week."
Morikawa won by seven strokes at 18-under (262). The freshman at Cal had three rounds of 64, following an opening round 70. The par-70 course played 6,912 yards.
Walsh sandwiched a round of 69 (-1) between his first and third round scores of 67 (-3). He carded a 74 (+4) in the final round. The Keller, Texas native made par on 49 holes, had 14 birdies and only eight bogeys over the 72 holes. He was two-under on par-three and par-five holes. Walsh had four birdies in each of his first three rounds.
Walsh heads to the U.S. Amateur Championship qualifier, before the Southern Amateur Championships in West Point, Miss. The Southern Amateur begins Wednesday at the Old Waverly Golf Club.
"It has been a busy few weeks, but I feel like my game is in a very good place right now," Walsh said. "I am ready to go out and compete in another high-level tournament again."
