Men's Golf Finishes Sixth after Stellar Day

CLE ELUM, Wash. -- The Gonzaga men's golf team climbed four spots on the leaderboard in the third and final round of the Husky Invitational at the Tumble Creek Golf Course Tuesday.

Sean Walsh led the Zags for the second straight week. The lone senior on the roster finished in a tie for 12th, after entering the third round in 14th. He ended the tournament six strokes over par (219). The Keller, Texas native carded a 72 (+1) in Round 3. Walsh was one-under through the first nine holes Tuesday, but closed two-over. He made 11 pars and three birdies in the final round.

Walsh finished with a tournament-high 13 birdies through the 54 holes. He was also seven-under on the course's par-five holes, with an average of 4.42 on those holes.

The Bulldogs made 44 birdies as a team, the fourth-best total in the 14-team field. GU had its best team total in the final round. The Zags opened the day going one-under as a team through the first nine holes on the back-nine. Gonzaga ended six-over (290) Tuesday, one stroke better than its second round total, and 20 strokes better than the first round. It finished the tournament with a total of 891 (+39).

Angus Montgomery started his final round in 40th, before ending in a tie for 28th with teammate Ryan Gaske. Montgomery had GU's best round Tuesday. The junior was even-par (71), making five birdies and eight pars in the third round. He finished the tournament at 11-over (224). Gaske backed up his second round 72 with a 73 (+2) in the third round. The junior made 12 pars Tuesday.

Will Brueckner was one stroke off of the junior duo at 12-over (225). He was three-over (74) in Round 3. The sophomore made four birdies and nine pars Tuesday. He finished tied for 34th. Brueckner went four-over on the course's par-four holes, with an average 4.15, the sixth-best in the 70-golfer field.

Freshman Tyler Munetake rounded out the GU scoring. He improved by eight strokes from his second to third round totals. The Wailuku, Hawaii native made four birdies en route to a 74 (+3) Round 3 finish. He placed 62nd at 21-over (234).

Oregon and Washington finished in a tie for the team title. They both were two-under (282) Tuesday, and 13-over (865) through three rounds.

The Huskies' Corey Pereira took medalist honors at seven-under (206). He was two-under in the third round and held off USC's Sean Crocker by one stroke for the title.

At the Husky Individual on the Prospector Golf Course, David Ganz finished tied for 15th. The sophomore had an 81 (+9) in his third round. He ended the tournament at 15-over (231). Kevin Kwon of Washington won the individual tournament title at even-par (216) through 54 holes.

Gonzaga has a break before traveling to the Bill Ross Invitational on Oct. 12-13. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Milburn Country Club in Overland, Kan.
