Jan. 29, 2016 SEATTLE -- Jordan Thurston ran the fastest-ever 5,000-meter time by a freshman on the opening day of the University of Washington Invitational Friday.
Thurston ran a 17:12.86 and placed 27th in the Dempsey Center. She came in sixth in her heat. Her time ranks fourth on the program's all-time list.
"Jordan ran really well in her Dempsey debut," GU women's head coach Patty Ley said. "She ran at the front for much of the race and then just couldn't quite cover the surge. But, she closed very well."
In the men's 5,000 meters, Dillon Quintana's time of 14:31.19 was the sixth-best finish Friday. It also moved the junior from 10th to fourth on the Bulldogs' all-time list. His previous personal record was 14:58.43.
Vince Hamilton broke into the Zags' all-time list at No. 6 with his finish Friday. He crossed the line at 14:37.11 and placed 11th.
Gonzaga had several solid finishes in the second heat as well. Forest Tarbath ran a personal best time of 14:51.85 and placed third in the heat. Kellen Manley also ran a PR of 14:52.61. Jack Pearce (14:57.38) and Max Kaderabek (15:01.94) rounded out the GU runners for the day.
"We thought all these 5K guys really competed today," Director of Gonzaga Track Pat Tyson said. "That is our goal. Learn how to hang on longer and make big time breakthroughs. Then we will take that momentum outdoors. We have another big day tomorrow!"
Gonzaga returns for the second day of the prestigious UW Invitational Saturday. The Zags' first race is the men's mile at 12:10 p.m. Live video and results will be available on GoZags.com.
