SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga women's rowing team officially started their 2016-17 season with the Head of the Spokane regatta against Washington State on the Spokane River on Saturday.
The regatta was set at 4500 meters and the wind swirled a bit throughout the day. The Zags were edged by 10 seconds in the varsity eight race with Washington State coming in at 14:39, and WSU won by 13 seconds in the second varsity eight race with a time of 15:25. Gonzaga won the third varsity eight race with a time of 16:03, 16 seconds faster than the Cougars.
The GU novice eight "A" boat won that race with a time of 18:05.
"Right now we only know where we are relative to Washington State, but we expect them to have a strong team this year," GU head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "We kept pace with them, but know we have to get a lot faster before the next race. It's so early in the season, we can really take today's results and work on things in practice as a result of that."
This regatta started the three-weekend fall season for the Zags. They are back on the water on October 29 at the Head of the American regatta in Lake Natoma, Calif.
