Gonzaga Match Play Results

SPOKANE, Wash.--The Gonzaga University women's golf team wrapped up its own Gonzaga Match Play Monday, losing the tournament finale 4-2 to 25th-ranked BYU at Manito Golf & Country Club.

The Bulldogs' two points came from two players who finished the tournament undefeated. The team's top seed, Ciera Min, closed out a perfect tournament with a 3&2 win over Kendra Dalton. Min led nearly the entire match, going 1 up on the second hole and never looking back. She added hole victories on Nos. 5 and 7 to make the turn at 3 up. Dalton took holes Nos. 10 and 14, but Min countered with a win on No. 13 to maintain the margin throughout.

Also undefeated at 3-0 on the weekend, Jessica Mangrobang closed out Brooklyn Hocker for a 1 up victory. Mangrobang led the match for most of the front nine, but Hocker squared the match on No. 11 and took a lead on No. 14. Mangrobang responded immediately to level it again, and the two halved each of the next three holes. On the par-4 18th, Mangrobang knocked her approach shot within 10 feet of the flagstick and drained the birdie putt for the win.

Sophomore Bianca Pagdanganan also played all 18 holes, falling 2 down to Alex White. Pagdanganan birdied No. 17 for the opportunity to halve the match on No. 18, but White sank a long birdie putt to cap off BYU's victory. BYU clinched the match in the No. 3 contest between Jena Gao and Rose Huang. Huang birdied the par-3 17th while Gao saw her birdie attempt lip out for a 2&1 loss.

The Cougars won the first two matches to finish as Anna Kennedy beat Nina Novilla 6&5 and Aiko Leong downed Diana Araneta 3&2.

"I am really happy with how the team progressed over three days," said Gonzaga head coach Brad Rickel. "We were much more competitive today, and this young team has really learned a lot throughout the tournament. Ciera and Jess were particularly impressive: Ciera dominated the other teams' No. 1 players while Jess showed great fight all week."

At 3-0 on the weekend, BYU earned the Gonzaga Match Play title. Seattle U and Portland State each finished the tournament 2-1, Gonzaga and Idaho went 1-2, and Eastern Washington ended at 0-3.

The Zags now return to stroke play, but they do remain in the state of Washington for another few weeks. Their next tournament will take place in Lakewood for Seattle U's Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational, played at Tacoma Country and Golf Club. That tournament runs Oct. 10-11.
