SEATTLE, Wash. - The Gonzaga women's rowing team completed its last regatta of the fall season Sunday in the 37th Annual Head of the Lake in Seattle. The 5,000-meter course spanned parts of both Lake Union and Lake Washington. The course began in Lake Union, then crossed through Portage Bay and Union Bay before making a turn in Lake Washington and finishing back in Union Bay.
The Zags entered four boats in the regatta, The Champ Women's 8+-Sponsored By Pocock Racing Shells, the Junior Varsity 8 race, and two boats in the Varsity 4 race.
The Varsity 8 boat of Karly Dougherty, Lauren English, Micailah Donner, Olivia Marsh, Lindey English, Rachael Arand, Meghan McCallum, Isabelle Belzil, Hannah Brown finished in fifth place with a time of 19:01.75. The boat defeated crews from Portland, Western Washington, and Seattle U. The Junior Varsity 8 boat of Alexa Jadallah, Clare Manthey, Caroline Maguire, Charlotte Lepp, Casey Harder, Olivia Lada, Georgia Davey, Amelie Tristant, Isabella Spies came across in fifth place as well, beating boats from Portland, Western Washington, and Oregon with a time of 19:49.43.
The Zags saw some special performances in the Varsity 4 race, as the "A" boat of Marie Hayman, Ana Delucchi, Audrey Murray, Katherine Conway, Megan Seifert took second place, just 14 seconds behind Washington at 22:11.53 and ahead of the Washington "B" and "C" boats. The Gonzaga "B" crew of Taylor Tyrell, Natalie O'Hare, Emma Delucchi, Cheryl Murbach, Alexandra Pinkley came in fifth at 22:42.33, behind the two Washington crews and ahead of Oregon and Portland.
"It was another informative day of racing for us," Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "The eights had performances representative of where they are at and the fours raced well. As we head into winter training we are not where we want to be. To get there we have to develop more mentally and physically. The good news is there is time, but we need to get to work now."
