SEATTLE -- Shelby Mills set her second Gonzaga women's track program record already this season, smashing the previous indoor 5,000-meter mark at the Husky Classic Friday.
Mills raced to a 16:25.35 finish in the elite field at the Dempsey Center. She easily broke Maggie Jones' previous record of 16:45.78, set at last year's Husky Classic. Mills placed fourth in her section of the event and 24th overall. The junior set a new 3,000-meter program record on the same track just two weeks ago at 9:35.31.
"Shelby ran really well at the front and then stayed solid as the lead moved away," Gonzaga women's Head Coach
Patty Ley said. "It has been a good indoor campaign and we are in a very good place heading towards the outdoor season. We have some adjustments to make and some workouts to do, but the pattern has been set."
Jones crossed the line at 17:18.49 Friday, while
Jordan Thurston finished with a time of 17:33.07. Thurston currently sits in fourth on the GU all-time list with a 17:12.86 at the UW Invitational earlier this season.
In the men's 5,000 meters,
Dillon Quintana led a quartet of Bulldog finishers. He finished with a time of 14:31.87. The senior currently sits in fourth on the program's all-time list at 14:31.19.
Matthew Crichlow (14:44.08) and
Vince Hamilton (14:45.54) wrapped up the first day of the meet for Gonzaga.
"The second heat had a good field, but Matt (Crichlow) fell back just after the mile with some respiratory issues," Director of GU Track
Pat Tyson said. "In Heat 3, Vince had a bold early lead through the first mile in 4:31, but fell back. Dillon was in the front pack through 4,000 meters and had it slip away. All three runners are disappointed, but tell me they will be ready to run major personal bests outdoors!"
The Zags open the second day of the Husky Classic with Sumner Goodwin and Scott Kopczynski in the men's 3,000 meters at 1:20 p.m. Saturday. Live video and results will be available on GoZags.com.
