SPOKANE, Wash.-For the second time this season, the Gonzaga University women's tennis team found itself on the high side of a 7-0 scoreline as the Zags swiftly dispatched local foe Eastern Washington Friday night at The Stevens Center in Spokane.
Once again, Domonique Garley started things off in singles play for Gonzaga, winning the first match to finish. She dispatched Faye Worral in straight sets, winning 12 of 15 games along the way. A Fort Worth, Texas, native, Garley has won the first singles match to finish in each of the Bulldogs' last three matches, ceding no more than three games in any contest. On court No. 4, sophomore Alex Bourguignon also extended her win streak to three matches, beating Eastern' s Dani Young 6-3, 6-0. It was Bourguignon's fourth dual victory in five tries and 11th singles win overall.
Also following the homestand's tradition, Nevada Apollo clinched Gonzaga's win with a victory at No. 3 singles. She breezed past opponent Rachel Swindell 6-0 in the first set but was tested much more in the second. Swindell actually took a 4-5 lead in the second frame, but Apollo rattled off three straight game wins to take the match in two sets.
Next to finish, Sophie Whittle squared off against Janaya Smith for the second time this season, again prevailing over the Eagle. Friday night's first set was a tightly-contested one which ended in a tiebreak with Whittle prevailing 7-2. In the second set, Whittle doubled up Smith for the dual win. The Nipomo, Calif., native beat Smith in during the fall tournament season as well, winning the championship match of the Bulldog Invite last November.
Samantha Polayes and Graciela Rosas capped off the sweep with wins at Nos. 2 and 5 singles, respectively.
"That's a talented Eastern team who had a successful start to their year, and we knew they'd come into the match ready to go," said Gonzaga head coach D.J. Gurule. "We matched their firepower but didn't get over the top. That's something that we talked about, staying within ourselves and playing our game. We did a really good job of that from start to finish."
To begin the match, Gonzaga swept the doubles point. Bourguignon and Melanie Yates opened the match with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, picking up their fifth win of the season. Less than a minute later, Polayes and Whittle clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win on court No. 1.
At No. 3 doubles, Garley and Sissi Koehler picked up their 10th doubles win of the season, beating Young and Katrina Domingo by a similar 6-3 scoreline.
The 7-0 sweep is Gonzaga's second of the season; they also won all seven points Jan. 29 against Montana. It's also their second in a row against Eastern Washington after downing the Eagles 7-0 on Feb. 7, 2015 during the Bulldogs' streak of five consecutive sweeps to open then 2015 dual season.
The Zags (4-1) will have little time for rest as they continue the homestand tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 13. That match, a contest against Seattle U, will begin at 11:00 a.m., again in The Stevens Center.
