LA QUINTA, Calif. -- The Gonzaga men's golf team sits in a tie for ninth on the team leaderboard after the opening round of the Prestige at PGA West Monday. Sean Walsh leads the Zags in a tie for eighth.
Walsh opened the three-day tournament with a 69 (-2). He had four birdies and 12 pars in the first round. The lone senior on the GU roster went one-under-par through the back-nine, his first nine holes, and one-under on the front-nine.
Ryan Gaske is tied for 24th. He was two-over (73) in Round 1. The junior also had 12 pars on the first day, along with two birdies.
Will Brueckner and Angus Montgomery had opening rounds of 75 (+4) and 77 (+6). Brueckner is tied for 42nd and Montgomery is tied for 60th. Both had two birdies Monday. Ben DuBois finished with an 83 (+12) in his season debut for the Zags. The sophomore is in 79th after the first day.
The Bulldogs are tied with No. 25 San Diego State in ninth place. Gonzaga totaled a 294 (+10) in Round 1.
Louisiana State, ranked 28th, sits atop the team leaderboard at seven-under (277). The Tigers are five strokes ahead of fifth-ranked Stanford. Pepperdine's Frederick Wedel leads the player leaderboard at six-under (66). Brandon Wu of Stanford is a stroke behind.
The second round on the Greg Norman Course begins Tuesday morning. DuBois tees off first for the Zags at 8:40 a.m.
