PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Gonzaga men's golfer Sean Walsh captured medalist honors at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Sunday.
Walsh won his second tournament of the season after carding a 70 (-2) in the final round on the Classic Club Golf Course. His three-round total of 209 (-7) was two strokes ahead of second-place Chelso Barrett of Texas Christian. Walsh became the first GU men's golfer to win a tournament in eight years when he placed first at the Saint Mary's Invitational earlier this season.
"I was pretty excited to get my second college victory today," Walsh said. "I felt like going into the event that Classic Club really fit my game. I just played aggressively with a lot of confidence the entire week, which helped me make some birdies. I was also able to eliminate some mistakes that held me back earlier in the week at the Prestige, which was a big contributor to my play the last few days."
Walsh entered Sunday's final round with a one-stroke lead on the leaderboard. The lone senior on the Bulldogs' roster was fantastic in Round 3. He was two-under through the front-nine and even-par on the back-nine. The Keller, Texas native had three birdies to only one bogey in the round. He had 14 of his 35 pars in the tournament in the final round. Out of 116 golfers, Walsh played the course's par-three holes the best. He had a 2.67 average (-4) on those holes. He also was five-under (4.42) on Par-5 holes, which was third in the field.
"I'm very happy for Sean," GU men's golf head coach Robert Gray said. "He hit the ball so well this week and had good speed control on the greens. The course demanded strong shots for birdie opportunities and he gave himself a lot of those. He had some bumps along the way, but handled the adversity very well. It's great to see his continued hard work pay off."
As a team, Gonzaga tied for ninth. The Zags finished 31-over (895). They were 13-over (301) in the third round after back-to-back rounds of 297 (+9). Kansas won the team-title. The Jayhawks were two-over (866) in the tournament, three strokes ahead of second-place Colorado.
Angus Montgomery was one-under on the back-nine Sunday and finished one-over (73). The junior tied for 26th at six-over (222).
"This was a big week for Gus," Gray said. "He didn't strike the ball well, but stayed patient and put together consistent good rounds on tough golf courses."
Ryan Gaske tied for 84th with a 54-hole total of 232 (+16). He was seven-over (79) in the final round. Will Brueckner finished the tournament 21-over (237) after going 12-over (84) on Day 3. He tied for 101st. Ben DuBois tied for 114th at 31-over (247). He carded a 79 (+7) Sunday.
"We had a good time down in Palm Springs this week, Walsh said. "We have been able to learn from our six tournament rounds. We realize what we need to work on for Bandon Dunes in a couple weeks."
Gonzaga has a break before hosting the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore., from March 6-8. The seventh annual tournament will be played on the Bandon Trails course.
