MBB Edges Pepperdine, 69-66

MALIBU, Calif. - Domantas Sabonis had 20 points and 11 rebounds for his conference-leading 14th double-double and Gonzaga held on Saturday night to beat Pepperdine, 69-66, on the road in Malibu, Calif.

Gonzaga (19-5, 11-2 West Coast) jumped out to its largest lead early in the second at 43-30 and led the entire half. Kyle Wiltjer added 17 points and Josh Perkins 10 to go along with six rebounds and five assists. The Zags rode spectacular free-throw shooting, especially down the stretch, to the victory. For the game, GU was 21-for-23 (.913) from the line, including its last nine in a row over the final 6:25. Sabonis made all 12 of his free throws in the game.

Pepperdine (14-10, 7-6) closed within 65-63 on Lamond Murray Jr.'s step-back jumper with 23.6 seconds left in the game. Melson was 4-for-7 from the field for nine points.

Kyle Dranginis made a pair of free throws with 18.9 seconds left and Silas Melson's dunk clinched it at 69-63 with six seconds to go.

Stacy Davis led Pepperdine with 26 points and Murray added 15. It was Pepperdine's second straight loss at home after starting the season 9-0.

Gonzaga won for the 31st straight time against Pepperdine going back to 2002.

After Gonzaga jumped out to a 9-0 lead, the Waves scored 14 straight before another Bulldog run silenced the amped up crowd. The Zags scored 15 of the next 20 points behind buckets from six different players. Wiltjer capped off the run with back-to-back field goals for a 24-19 GU lead with 7:55 to go in the first half.

After taking a 34-26 lead into halftime, Gonzaga came out firing in the second half with threes from Wiltjer and McClellan to push the lead to double digits for the first time at 41-30. Back-to-back Wiltjer jumpers made it 51-41 with 12:06 to go.

After GU went up 54-45 on an and-1 by Melson, Pepperdine responded with a 6-0 run to cut the GU lead to three points.

Gonzaga will be back on the road for the final two games of a four-game road trip at Portland on Thursday and at SMU on Saturday.
