SPOKANE, Wash. â€" The Gonzaga women's and men's track programs began their outdoor seasons at the Buc Scoring Invite at Whitworth University Thursday.
Shelby Mills won the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 16:25.81. The time was not only a personal record by nearly 13 seconds, but it was also the third fastest time in program history. She was followed by teammate Jordan Thurston in second place at 17:03.51. Olivia Evans was fifth at 18:28.46.
"Shelby went out quickly and just worked at keeping a good rhythm," GU women's Head Coach Patty Ley said. "Jordan was also keeping a great rhythm. Olivia and Julie (Henling) worked together for much of the race and had really nice openers. It was a deep race and the field was an excellent race on a beautiful evening."
The Gonzaga men swept the top six spots led by Sumner Goodwin's first place finish. The sophomore crossed the line at 14:53.17. Goodwin edged out Vince Hamilton (14:53.23) at the line. Forest Tarbath (15:00.02), Danny Lunder (15:01.02) and Dillon Quintana (15:01.61) rounded out the top five.
"It was a great workout 5,000 at the Pine Bowl," Director of GU Track Pat Tyson said. "Sumner Goodwin did much of the pacing and his teammates held on to sweep the top six spots! Our goal was to have a progressive paced race, and it was a very controlled first race. We're very excited for our crew of middle distance, steeplechase, and 10K guys tomorrow!"
The Zags open the second day of the Buc Scoring Invite with the 10,000 meters Friday at 3:10 p.m. Full results of the meet will be available on GoZags.com following the final event.
