STANFORD, Calif. -- Shelby Mills continues to outdo herself. The Gonzaga women's track junior broke her own 3,000-meter steeplechase school record Friday at the Stanford Invitational.
Mills was the first collegian across the line in the second section at 10:06.49, nearly five seconds faster than her previous record set at last season's NCAA West Preliminaries. She entered the meet with the third-fastest 5,000 meter time in the west region this season.
"Shelby ran at the front for most of the race," GU women's Head Coach Patty Ley said. "She ran strongly and evenly and finished really well."
Maggie Jones placed 13th in her section of the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:36.56. The senior is fourth on the program's all-time list with a personal record of 16:27.86 set at last year's Oregon Relays.
"Maggie ran very well for the first 4k, then reached a little and struggled in the last 800," Ley said. "Still, it was the second fastest time she has run and 10 seconds faster than last year at this time. Despite our success, it feels like lots of work can be done. But, we're very happy with the day!"
At the Legends Distance Carnival hosted by UCLA, Sumner Goodwin ran the fourth-fastest 5,000-meter time in program history. The sophomore crossed the line in the elite field at 14:18.43, which was ninth in the event.
Kellen Manley jumped up the program's all-time 3,000-meter steeplechase list. The sophomore's time of 9:06.17 moved him from seventh to fourth in GU history. He placed fourth in the event Friday. Kyle Branch was fifth at 9:09.25. He improved on his previous personal record of 9:23.21, and is now fifth on the all-time list.
In the men's 10,000 meters, Jack Pearce placed fourth at 30:16.68, which is fifth on the GU list. Dillon Quintana and Max Kaderabek finished fifth and sixth Friday at 30:45.11 and 30:46.11. Quintana's time is ninth on the GU all-time list.
In the men's 1,500 meters, Ian Goldizen ran the sixth-fastest time in program history. The junior finished at 3:52.17, placing fourth in the event. Conor McCandless was close behind in sixth place at 3:53.22. His time is 10th in GU history.
Jordan Thurston placed second in the women's elite 5,000 meters with a time of 16:52.04, moving her from eighth to seventh on the all-time program list. Katy Culver placed eighth at 17:24.67. Julie Henling placed second in the open 5,000-meter field, crossing the line at 17:50.75.
Mason Villarma (4:05.81) and Zac Garrard (4:06.09) were sixth and seventh in the men's elite mile.
"So many good things done by the Zags today," Director of Gonzaga Track Pat Tyson said. "The steeplers, the milers, the 5k runners, Jordan was awesome, and Sumner had a nice PR! We had so many positives and it is only April 1."
Another contingent of Bulldogs will run at the Sam Adams Classic in Spokane Saturday. A trio of Zags start the day for GU in the women's 5,000 meters at 11:15 a.m. Gonzaga will have representatives in eight events at Whitworth University ending with the women's 1,600-meter relay at 4:05 p.m.
