Round 3 Tee Times
MARANA, Ariz. -- Sean Walsh climbed up the individual leaderboard after firing a 70 (-2) in the second round of the NCAA Championships Tucson Regional on the Gallery Golf Club's North Course Tuesday.
Walsh jumped up 15 spots on the leaderboard behind a second round that featured 11 pars, three birdies and an eagle. He is one stroke behind the current individual qualifier for the national finals.
Starting the round on the back-nine, Walsh made par on Hole 10, before birdieing the 11th for the second straight day. He bogeyed the 13th and 15th holes, before eagling the 550-yard par-five 16th hole. Walsh then birdied No. 17 and made par on 18. He matched his Round 1 back-nine total at two-under (34).
Walsh continued his solid play on the front-nine, making par on six of the first seven holes. He birdied the par-four fifth hole. The Keller, Texas native did bogey No. 8, before making par on the ninth-hole to finish the day. His even par (36) total on the front-nine was a two-stroke improvement from Monday.
Walsh leads the 75-golfer field with a 4.25 average on the course's par-five holes. He is six-under on those four holes through the first two rounds.
"Windy conditions and tough pins made scoring difficult today," GU men's golf Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Sean hit 16 greens, which was very impressive under the conditions. Even with his round today, he would be the first to say he hasn't put his whole game together. His putting hasn't been as sharp as it typically is. So, we'll go out tomorrow and try to put it all together to post his best round yet on this course."
Franklin Huang of Stanford tops the individual leaderboard at eight-under (136). He was three-under (69) in Round 2 after a 67 (-5) in the first round. Oregon's Thomas Lim and Lee Hodges of UAB are a stroke behind Huang. Matt Lutz of UC Riverside is currently the individual qualifier for the national finals at three-under (141) in a tie for fifth.
Top-ranked Stanford sits in first on the team leaderboard at 18-under (558). The Cardinal has a 15-stroke lead over second-place Oregon.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals in Eugene, Ore., May 27-June 1.
Tucson's third and final round tees off at 7 a.m. Wednesday. Walsh begins his round on the 10th hole at 9:34 a.m. Live scoring will be available on GoZags.com.
