LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Maggie Jones capped off of her Gonzaga career with a stellar effort in the women's 5,000 meters at the NCAA West Preliminaries Saturday. She finished eighth in her heat with a time of 16:43.62 at Rock Chalk Park.

Jones was a late addition to the 48-runner field after a medical scratch was released last Sunday. The senior entered Saturday's race seeded 48th and finished 19th in the region. She ran with the front six runners for a majority of the race, remaining in contention for one of the top-five qualifying spots.

"Wow, what an awesome race to end her Gonzaga career," GU women's Head Coach Patty Ley said. "All I could hope for was a great race and she delivered her best race ever. The time doesn't reflect the poise, patience and just great racing tactics. I'm proud of her effort and proud of all she has done for our program."

Jones qualified with a 16:28.29 at the Oregon Relays on April 15. The Richland, Wash. native has the fourth-best time on the program's all-time list, 16:27.88, which was at the 2015 Oregon Relays.

"Maggie shocked the 5K field," Director of Gonzaga Track Pat Tyson said. "Although, she is not Eugene-bound, she simply ran a magnificent and competitive race! What a way to end her career!"

Shelby Mills advanced to the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase national semifinals with her finish in the prelims Friday. She will run on June 9, beginning with the first heat at 5:02 p.m. Live coverage will be available on GoZags.com.
