Sept. 20, 2016 Juli Inkster Spartan Invite Final Results
SAN JOSE, Calif.--The Gonzaga University women's golf team finished its second tournament in as many weeks Tuesday as Ciera Min tied for fourth and the team sixth at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational in San Jose, California.
Min tied for fourth place after taking 218 strokes (+2) in three rounds at Almaden Golf and Country Club. She counted 75 (+3) during Tuesday's final round, playing the first 12 holes at even-par. This is already Min's second Top 5 finish after beginning the year in second place at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic Sept. 12-13. The back-to-back Top 5s are the senior's first since finishing the WSU Cougar Cup and Rose City Collegiate in ties for fourth and third, respectively, as a freshman.
Two Zags ended in a three-way tie for 24th in San Jose as Jessica Mangrobang and Bianca Pagdanganan each shot 230 (+14) during the tournament. Mangrobang ended with her best collegiate round, a 2-over-par 74, after fighting for a birdie and 14 pars on the day. She rose 16 spots up the leaderboard on Tuesday with the tally. Pagdanganan, meanwhile, shot 79 (+7) Tuesday, getting off to a rough start but playing her final nine holes at 1-over.
Freshman Nina Novilla also climbed a bit during the final round after shooting 77 (+5). She ended the tournament in a tie for 36th at 233 (+17), gaining four spots over the final 18 holes. A native of Carson, California, Novilla also shot the lowest round of her young career Tuesday.
Also seeing her best round of the tournament, Jena Gao ended the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational with a 4-over-par 76, three strokes fewer than her second round tally. She ended in a tie for 50th at 237 (+21).
As a team, the Zags counted 302 strokes (+14) during the final round, moving into a tie for sixth with a mark of 908 (+44). They were even with West Coast Conference foe Santa Clara and finished ahead of the WCC's San Francisco as well.
BYU won the tournament with a cumulative score of 882 (+18). The Cougars' Kendra Dalton won the tournament at 212 strokes (-4) and one of only two players to finish the tournament at or under par.
"Ciera continued to lead us this week," said Gonzaga women's golf head coach Brad Rickel. "She played very solid and impressive golf the entire round and is showing her maturity in everything she is doing. Jessica and Nina continue to improve and are starting to help us. I am encouraged by the growth this week."
The Zags' next tournament will run Saturday, Oct. 1 through Monday, Oct. 3, when they host the Gonzaga Match Play at Spokane's Manito Golf and Country Club. They'll play three rounds of match play over three days against BYU, Portland State, and Seattle U. Eastern Washington and Idaho will also compete at Manito.
