SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga men's rowing team is set to officially kick off their spring season on Friday, March 17, against UC San Diego, Santa Clara, and the University of San Diego.

The Zags will compete against the three on the 17th and then row a scrimmage against them on the 18th. The Zags last competed in San Diego two years ago, when they finished in second place overall, with second-place finishes for the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and novice eight boats. The Zags finished second behind USD in three of four boats they put on the water, and second behind UCSD in the third varsity 8+ boat.

The event always takes place in Mission Bay, with the option of four different races depending on the condition of the water.

"We have not had any water time until getting down here for spring break so we are a bit behind the eight ball for being up to race speed," Gonzaga head coach Dan Gehn said. "None the less, it's been a good week of work and we welcome the chance to get down the course."

At the conclusion of 2016, the Zags battled all three at the Western Sprints in Lake Natoma, Calif. GU beat USD in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, and third varsity eight races, with second-place finishes in the latter two. UCSD and USD competed in the City Championships in February of this year, with UCSD taking the victory.
