Gonzaga Notes | Saint Mary's Preview | Pacific Preview
EVERY ROSE HAS ITS THORN:
- The Zags downed Portland 4-3 last weekend, but Gonzaga lost the doubles point for just the second time in West Coast Conference action and fifth time all dual season...once singles play started, GU took a 3-1 lead after the first three singles matches finished...sophomore Domonique Garley clinched the dual with a three-set victory on court six to remain undefeated on the dual year.
THE FINAL HOMESTAND:
- Gonzaga begins the final homestand of the year with a big match against Saint Mary's...both teams are tied for second place in the West Coast Conference at 4-1 (along with San Diego)...the Gaels enter Friday's match with a 9-6 record and on a three-match win streak.
- The Zags have one win over Saint Mary's since 2000, that coming in the 2001 season...the Gaels have won the last 14 meetings between the two clubs, including both last season...the last time these two squads met in Spokane, the Zags nearly pulled off the upset of then-No. 33 Saint Mary's but fell 4-3.
- Parminder Kaur leads the team with an 8-3 dual record at the bottom three positions of the lineup...Jana McCord has played all 14 duals at No. 1 singles, going 4-10...in doubles, Clementine Clement and Jacqueline Pelletier are 6-1 at No. 3 doubles...four different pairs have spent time at the top doubles slot.
- Against Pacific, meanwhile, the Zags are 3-0 since the teams' first meeting in 2014...last year in Stockton, the Zags downed the Tigers 4-2 for their record 15th win of the season...GU won the doubles point and then got singles wins from Alex Bourguignon, Graciela Rosas, and Domonique Garley for the dual victory.
- The Tigers are 5-11 on the year and still are looking for their first conference victory...they've lost their last seven matches dating back to March 18.
- Yuki Asami has the best dual record on the team at 5-7 at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, while Maayan Sela has gone 5-10 atop the singles lineup...10 different doubles pairs have taken the courts for the Tigers, and Sela and Cristina Saenz de Bruruaga Ruiz going 3-4 at No. 1 doubles.
CAN'T SPELL STEVENS WITHOUT THE W:
- While there is no W in The Stevens Center, there have been plenty of Ws inside the Zags' home facility...Gonzaga is a perfect 8-0 at home this dual season and has a chance to cap its first undefeated year at home this weekend.
- During the dual season, the Zags have won 32 of 36 completed singles matches and 11 of 15 finished doubles contests...three Zags: Domonique Garley, Kate Ketels, and Graciela Rosas are unbeaten in home singles matches this year...also, the doubles pairs of Ketels and Haruna Tsuruta (4-0) and Rosas and Sophie Whittle (2-0) are unbeaten at home.
- Since the facility opened in January 2014, the Zags are 32-10 during home duals...they went 9-2 at home in 2015 and 10-1 last year...they have a .726 win percentage in home singles contests (162-61) and .613 mark in home doubles (65-41).
