April 22, 2017 Sunday Pairings
CLEMSON, S.C. - The (RV) Gonzaga Bulldogs completed eight total races on Saturday at the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C.
The weather in the morning was nice with a small wind, and a heavier cross wind with variable weather came in the afternoon.
The Zags made some switches to their lineups before the day began, as Meghan McCallum moved to the fourth seat in the varsity eight boat and Caroline Maguire went to the second seat. Madison Spina went to the seventh seat in the second varsity eight boat and Casey Harder moved to the fifth seat.
The Bulldogs top crew started the day and finished sixth at 6:38.397, one second faster than host Clemson and just a second back of Tennessee. Later in the day, they recorded a fifth place finish at 6:34.828, defeating regional rival Oregon State and Navy, and just a second behind No. 19 Duke.
The second varsity eight boat was fifth in their first race at 6:40.981, beating Columbia and Clemson, and only three seconds behind Tennessee. Their second race time was 6:47.177, ahead of Navy, Central Florida, and Oregon State for fourth place. Navy interfered with Gonzaga during the race and as a result was placed behind them in the finish.
The Bulldogs' varsity four finished third in their first race with a time of 7:23.082, beating No. 15 Syracuse, Tennessee, No. 20 Indiana, and Clemson. Later in the day they finished sixth at 7:32.850 beating Oregon State and just a second back of Central Florida.
The second varsity four finished third in their first race at 7:28.945, beating No. 15 Syracuse, Tennessee, and Central Florida. They were fifth in the afternoon race at 7:37.795, beating Navy and Tennessee and just one second behind Clemson.
"The varsity four and second varsity eight had really solid races in the morning," Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "The performance was not great from the varsity eight as they were a bit frantic and disjointed, and did not stay within themselves. We dug a hole in the morning, but the varsity eight had a much better race in the afternoon. They were not at their best, but more representative of themselves. The goal for everyone tomorrow is to use the last race before the WCC Championships to focus on doing what we are capable of."
The Bulldogs' varsity eight will row in the C Final at 4:30 am PST tomorrow against Minnesota, Clemson, Columbia, Oregon State, and Navy. The second varsity eight will row in the B Final at 5:04 am against Central Florida, Tennessee, Oklahoma, No. 14 Washington State, (RV) UCLA, and No. 18 Louisville. The varsity four is joined in the B Final at 5:30 am by Columbia, Penn, Washington State, Minnesota, UCLA, and No. 15 Syracuse. Finally, the second varsity four will go at 5:56 am in the B Final against Cornell, UCLA, Penn, Syracuse, and Columbia.
