V8 Takes C Final Title At Clemson Invite

April 23, 2017

RESULTS

CLEMSON, S.C. - The (RV) Gonzaga Bulldogs completed their last four races prior to the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships on Sunday at the Clemson Invitational in Clemson, S.C.

The varsity eight took home the victory in the C Final, beating second-place Navy by three seconds at 6:40.432. In the second varsity eight B Final the Zags finished fifth at 6:55.417, two seconds faster than No. 18 Louisville and just one second back of Tennessee. In the varsity four B Final the Bulldogs came in fourth at 7:43.273, one second ahead of Penn and less than a second behind (RV) UCLA. The Zags' second varsity four finished runner-up in the B Final only one second behind No. 15 Syracuse and an easy five seconds ahead of Columbia at 7:56.341.

"We were pleased to be able to finish the weekend with solid racing in great conditions, and while we wanted to finish higher in the team standings, we did all we could to place as high as possible," Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "Knowing that this was our last opportunity to race prior to the WCC Championships, it was important to make progress and gain valuable racing experience. We felt that all of the crews did a good job committing to each other and that served them well in some very tight racing. We now have just under three weeks to prepare and continue progressing towards our ultimate goal. On May 13 we only get one shot and we have to do everything we can in the coming days to get it right. We are grateful to Clemson University for including us in such a deep and competitive field."

The win by the varsity eight marked the first win at the Clemson Invitational for the Bulldogs in program history. The Bulldogs finished 14th overall in the total points standings in the invite.

The Bulldogs will now begin a solid three weeks of training in preparation for the WCC Championsips at Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento on May 13, with the hopes of earning a bid to the NCAA National Championships in New Jersey.
