STANFORD, Calif. – The Gonzaga women's tennis team completed the first day at the ITA Northwest Regionals at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford, Calif. Senior
Graciela Rosas advanced to the round of 32 while Rosas paired while two Gonzaga doubles teams advanced to the Round of 32.
"Unfortunately, some of the matches didn't fall the way we wanted, but I thought as a whole we competed really well," head women's tennis coach
D.J. Gurule said. "We just need to regroup and look for new opportunities tomorrow."
In singles play, Rosas led the Bulldogs with an opening round win over Portland's Angela Schuster (6-1, 7-6(4)), followed by a two-set win over Eastern Washington's Stephanie Broussard (6-3, 6-0). Rosas faces Maria Kozyreva of Saint Mary's Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the Round of 32.
Kate Ketels and
Domonique Garley also picked up first round wins; Ketels won by default as Santa Clara's Maddie Pothoff withdrew due to injury, and Garley defeated Sacramento State's Carolina Chernyetsky 6-4, 6-2. Each fell in the Round of 64 but will continue play in the consolation brackets Saturday.
In doubles play, Rosas and Garley defeated Santa Clara's Nadine DelCarmen and Lindsey Pesqueira 8-3; the pair will face Washington's Vanessa Wong and Delara Zamani Saturday at 9 a.m.
Katie Day and Ketels also picked up a doubles win as they bested Madison Clarke and Maddie Pothoff of Santa Clara by default as the Broncos were forced to withdraw due to injury. They face Sara Choy and Emma Higuchi Saturday at 9 a.m.
