Late Seattle U Rally Downs Baseball, 6-4

Box Score March 14, 2018

SEATTLE - Gonzaga baseball took a two-run lead into the seventh, but wasn't able to hold on against Seattle U on Wednesday night in Seattle, Wash.

The Zags started the game a 3-0 lead through three innings, and answered Seattle U's two runs to push the lead back to 4-2 heading to the seventh. The Redhawks then scored three in the seventh and one more in the eighth for the final 6-4 score.

"That wasn't the best effort tonight all around," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We need to have a great practice tomorrow and be ready to open conference play at home on Friday. We are excited to get out on our own field in front of our home crowd."

On the mound for the Zags, starter Keaton Knueppel had an effective outing despite some free bases for the Redhawks. He didn't allow a hit in his 3.0 innings pitched, but gave up two runs after runners reached on three walks and two hit-by pitches. Trent Schulte then worked 3.2 innings and gave up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts before Taylor Davis pitched the final 1.1 giving up two runs on four hits with one strikeout.

Four Zags had two hits each with Jake Vieth, Austin Pinorini, Nick Nyquist, and Jace VanDeBrake. Gunnar Schubert kept his offensive streaks alive collecting a hit to reach base for the 16th straight game and move his hit streak to 10 games.

GU got on the board with a run in each of the first three innings.

In the first, Branson Trube launched his team-leading third home run of the season over the left centerfield wall. Jace VanDeBrake then helped Nyquist score after getting in a rundown between first and second in the second inning. He then brought home a run with a sacrifice fly in the third.

Daniel Fredrickson capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

After 16 straight games away from Spokane, the Zags will play their home and West Coast Conference opener on Friday at 6 p.m. to begin a three-game series against Pepperdine.
