Series Notes:
- Gonzaga and BYU meet for the 19th time in program history and the 10th time in Provo.
- The Bulldogs are 0-4 against the Cougars under
Diane Nelson.
- Gonzaga's lone win over BYU came on Nov. 7, 2011 in Provo. The Bulldogs hit .291 for the match and finished with 68 kills, 65 assists, 72 digs and 6.0 blocks in the 3-1 match win. Gonzaga's 68 kills rank ninth in program history during the rally scoring era for kills in a four set match, while its 65 assists rank seventh.
- In the last meeting, BYU defeated Gonzaga 3-0 in Spokane on Nov. 9, 2017.
SCOUTING BYU:
- The No. 1 Cougars are one of three undefeated teams left in the nation as they boast a 13-0 overall record and a perfect 3-0 mark in WCC play. BYU has lost just four sets on the entire season, and the Cougars rank in the top 10 in the nation in three categories: Hitting percentage (.336, 1st), assists per set (13.70, 7th) and kills per set (14.42, 10th).
- As a squad, BYU averages 14.42 kills per set hitting .336 to go along with 13.70 assists, 12.19 digs and 2.72 blocks per set. The Cougars are led by Roni Jones-Perry and McKenna Miller at 4.68 and 3.40 kills per set; Jones-Perry ranks 11th in the nation in kills per set. Lyndie Haddock-Eppich adds 11.35 assists per set while Mary Lake leads the defensive effort with 4.28 digs per set. Kennedy Eschenberg and Heather Gneiting add 1.44 and 1.21 blocks per set, respectively.
- BYU picked up its No. 1 ranking Sept. 10 following wins over No. 10 USC and No. 25 Marquette, marking the first time a WCC school has snagged the top sport. So far this season, the Cougars have defeated four ranked opponents: No. 1 Stanford, No. 10 USC, No. 25 Marquette and No. 24 Utah. BYU also defeated (RV) Wichita State.
- The Cougars were picked to win the WCC title with nine first-place votes while five players were named to the All-WCC Preseason Volleyball Team: Eschenberg, Haddock-Eppich, Jones-Perry, Miller and Lake.
LOEWEN HEATING UP
Through 11 matches of nonconference play,
Kaylie Loewen recorded 50 total kills hitting .186, well below her career average of .231. But Loewen came alive during the conference-opening weekend against Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine, finishing with a team-best 26 kills hitting .311. She posted a season-high 14 kills against Loyola Marymount on Sept. 20 to help Gonzaga to the 3-0 sweep, and she followed it up with another double-figure performance with 12 kills against Pepperdine.
