Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women's tennis team opened up the 2019 dual season with a 6-1 victory over Idaho on Saturday morning at the Stevens Center.
Gonzaga dominated doubles from the start with a sweep and then quickly closed out the match in singles with the first three matches to finish in straight sets.
"It was a strong start to the season," head coach
D.J. Gurule said. "We were excited to get back out there, and I'm proud of the way the ladies competed. Idaho is a solid team and pushed us across the board. We are looking forward to the ITAs next weekend."
GU took Nos. 1 and 2 in doubles with
Domonique Garley and newcomer
Sara Komer earning the first win 6-2, followed by a 6-2 victory by
Sophie Whittle and
Graciela Rosas.
Whittle, ranked No. 5 in the nation in singles, took the first singles point after Idaho's Marianna Petrei retired due to injury with Whittle up 4-1. Rosas then added a flawless victory 6-0, 6-0 on No. 2 to make it 3-0.
Haruna Tsuruta clinched the Zag win with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on No. 4 to make it 4-0.
GU also added victories by
Vlada Medvedcova 7-6(3), 6-1 on No. 5 and Komer 6-4, 6-2 on No. 6.
GU will be back in action on Jan. 26 when they take on No. 4 Duke at the ITA Kick-off Weekend in Durham, N.C., at 7 a.m. Pacific. Check GoZags.com for links to live scoring.
