SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team swept visiting Washington State at the annual Head of the Spokane Saturday morning on the Spokane River. The Bulldogs overcame chilly, rainy conditions to win the varsity eight, junior varsity eight and third varsity eight races.

Dan Gehn said. "I felt they were dialed in and really on it following a great week of practice."
Saturday was GU's first, and last, regatta of the season on the Spokane River. The day featured two 5,000-meter flights. The Bulldogs' varsity eight, coxed by
Scott Stewart, dominated the first flight, finishing 32 seconds ahead of WSU's varsity eight with a time of 15:29.
"[Today's race] went really well," senior
Ian Melder said. "It was off to a great start; we've had a great last couple weeks of practice and this week in particular went really well. We had a stable lineup…today, the warmup went super well and everyone was right on it. We went off and had a great race all the way through."
Gonzaga's junior varsity eight finished in 16:01, 53 seconds ahead of its Washington State counterpart. The Zags third varsity eight completed the sweep, finishing in 16:27, over two minutes ahead of the Cougars' final two novice boats.
The Bulldogs return to the water for the Head of the American, Oct. 26 in Sacramento, Calif.
